Government also advised Chilima to desist from making overzealous declarations as they tend to create expectations and a recipe for rejecting outcomes of elections when such expectations are not realised. He applauded efforts by the Malawi Police Service in dealing with the matter and effecting arrests of suspects of violence. He reminded him that it is the responsibility is of every citizen to work together in rooting out the vice. In a statement, Minister of Information Henry Mussa faulted the Vice President’s thinking in suggesting that the duty of ending violence in Malawi is of the President and the government alone. This is in response to the address the UTM president made on Wednesday in Lilongwe which centred on violence by suspected ruling party cadets who continue unleashing terror on political opponents.Ĭhilima, who came out strong against acts of violence, noted that if his followers were to retaliate, things would turn ugly but because his party promotes peace, they have been practicing restraint. Government has described threats of retaliation by Vice President Saulos Chilima as irresponsible as they only serve to sow seeds of hatred and schemes of political thuggery which Malawians do not want.
